School can be a whirlwind of emotions for children. From academic challenges to social pressures, it’s natural for them to experience stress at times.

As a parent, it can be tough to see your child struggling. But there are steps you can take to help them navigate these stressful situations and build resilience.

Hi, I’m Allison Pater, a Child Therapist at Kid Matters Counseling, and in this article, I’m sharing four practical tips to support your child through school stress.

Communication is Key

Create a safe space where your child feels comfortable talking about their worries. Ask open-ended questions and listen actively without judgment.

And, validate their emotions. Let them know it’s okay to feel stressed, overwhelmed, or frustrated.

Build a Strong Foundation

Establish a consistent sleep schedule, homework routine, and healthy meal plan. Predictability helps children feel grounded and reduces stress.

Also, help your child develop organizational skills. This could involve using planners, color-coding notebooks, or creating designated study areas.

Empower Your Child

Large projects or tests can feel daunting. Help your child break them down into smaller, more manageable steps over a series of days. Depending on your child’s age, most schools don’t recommend more than 30 minutes of homework at night.

Also, acknowledge and celebrate even small victories. This reinforces positive behaviors and builds confidence.

Go Beyond Academics

Schedule time for unstructured play! Whether it’s playing outdoors, engaging in hobbies, or spending time with friends, playtime provides a much-needed mental break.

And, encourage regular physical activity. Exercise is a great stress reliever and promotes overall well-being.

At Kid Matters Counseling, we specialize in helping children regulate their emotions and equip them with tools to help manage stress. If you’re concerned about your child’s stress levels and big emotions, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with us today.
