Have you ever noticed how kids naturally gravitate towards make-believe? Whether it’s dressing up as a superhero or creating elaborate stories during playtime, role-playing is more than just fun and games.

For children struggling with trauma, anxiety, or depression, it can be a powerful tool for emotional release in therapy.

Hi, I’m Allison Pater, a Child Therapist at Kid Matters Counseling. I work with kids ages 2-12, and one of the techniques I find most effective is role-play. It might surprise you to learn that role-playing isn’t just for aspiring actors!

Here’s how it works in therapy:

First, It Provides a Safe Space for Expression

Imagine a child who’s experienced trauma. Talking about it can be overwhelming.

Role-playing allows them to express their feelings indirectly, through the actions and words of a character. Children often use role play using puppets or sand tray figures which allows them to externalize their trauma, creating a psychological distance that feels better.

Second, It Builds Confidence

Many children I see struggle with social anxiety. Role-playing allows them to practice communication skills and social interactions in a controlled environment.

They can experiment with different scenarios and build confidence for real-life situations.

Third, It Helps Them Understand Emotions

By stepping into the shoes of another character, children gain a new perspective on emotions. They can explore feelings like anger, sadness, or fear without feeling overwhelmed by their own experiences.

And, while costumes and scripts can be fun additions, role-play in therapy is a flexible tool. It can be as simple as a therapist and child taking turns playing different roles in a conversation, or it can involve creating a whole imaginary scenario. The key is creating a safe space for expression and exploration.

Role-play is just one of many valuable tools in my play therapy toolbox to help the kiddos I serve every week.
