Attachment is a word used by mental health professionals to describe the interpersonal bond or relationship between child and caregivers (typically parents).

When there is stress or a break in the parent-child relationship it is important for repair to take place.

Attachment-based play therapy can help you reduce the stress and strengthen your relationship with your child.

Here’s a short list of questions that might help you determine if attachment-based play therapy can help you and your child out:

  1. Are struggling to connect with your young child?
  2. Do you sometimes feel rejected by your child?
  3. Does your child give you mixed messages within your parent child relationship with them?
  4. Does your child push you away in one moment and then, the next second, they become terrified for you to leave?
The above could be normal child development as children test boundaries and explore their own identities. Stress, however, can drive a wedge between you and your child.  It is something to pay attention to.

Stress in a parent child relationship can be triggered by numerous factors such as significant illness, loss, trauma, adoption, developmental/communication delays, or even a mismatch in parenting style with the child’s personality.

If there is stress in your relationship your child might be experiencing attachment needs.

The parent child relationship is extremely powerful and influential on a developing child.

Playful and positive interactions in a safe therapeutic space provides a structure for  ruptured relationships to be repaired. Attachment based play therapy could be the help you’re looking for to reshape negative behaviors, build self-esteem, reduce anxiety and anger, accept nurture and love, and build healthy relationship with other.
